Recreational Pilot Permit

AGE: Minimum age of 14 for solo flights and minimum age of 16 to hold permit.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENT: Category 4 Medical
EXPERIENCE: An applicant must have acquired no less than 25 hours Pilot Flight Training which, except as may otherwise be authorized, shall be under the direction and supervision of a qualified Flight Instructor on the applicable category of aircraft.
AEROPLANE CATEGORY:
 - 15 hours of dual flight time, including
- 2 hours cross country flight time (1 flight with 2 legs of 30 minutes each)
- 5 hours of solo flight time
KNOWLEDGE: The applicant shall further demonstrate their knowledge by:
1. Obtaining no less than 60% on the written examination (RPPAE) in each of the 4 mandatory subject areas: Air Law Regulations, Navigation, Meteorology, Aeronautics & General Knowledge and an overall mark of 60.
2. Satisfactorily demonstrating to a D.F.T.E. in flight and on the ground their ability to perform safely as the Pilot-in-Command of an aeroplane.
SKILL: The applicant shall pass a flight test conducted by Transport Canada or a Designated Flight Test Examiner. (D.F.T.E)

Private Pilot Licence

AGE: Minimum age of 14 for solo flights and minimum age of 17 to hold licence.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENT: Category 3 medical by C.A.M.E.
EXPERIENCE: An applicant must have acquired no less than 45 hours Private Pilot flight training which, except as may otherwise be authorized, shall be under the direction and supervision of a qualified Flight Instructor on the applicable category of aircraft.
AEROPLANE CATEGORY:
- 17 hours dual flight time, including;
(a) 3 hours cross country flight time
(b) 5 hours of instrument time of which no more than 3 hours may be instrument ground time. Instrument ground time is in addition to the 45 hours stated above, as well as in addition to the 17 hours stated above.
- 12 hours solo flight time, including;
(a) 5 hours cross country flight time with triangular flight of no less than 120 nautical miles and shall, except where authorized, include 2 full stop landings at points other than the point of departure.
KNOWLEDGE: The applicant shall further demonstrate their knowledge by:
1. Completing a course of no less than 40 hours Private Pilot Aeroplane ground school instruction on the following subjects: Canadian Aviation Regulations, Aerodynamics and Theory of Flight, Meteorology, Airframes, Engines & Systems, Flight Instruments, Radio a & Electronic Theory, Navigations, Flight Operations, Licensing Requirements and Human Factors including Pilot Decision Making.
2. Obtaining no less than 60% on the written examination (PPAER) in each of the 4 mandatory subject areas, as well in the overall written examination
1. Air Law Regulations, Rules and Orders Air Traffic Services, practices and procedures, and licensing requirements relevant to the licence
2. Navigation-navigation radio aids and electronic theory
3. Meteorology
4. Aeronautics, general knowledge, airframes, engines and systems, theory of flight, flight instruments and flight operations.
SKILL: The applicant shall pass a flight test conducted by Transport Canada or a Designated Flight Test Examiner. (D.F.T.E)

Commercial Pilot Licence

AGE: Minimum age of 18 to hold licence.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENT: Category 1 medical by C.A.M.E.
EXPERIENCE:

1. An applicant must have acquired no less than 200 hours flight time of which no less than 100 hours are pilot-in-command time including 20 hours cross-country pilot-in-command flight time.
2. An applicant, following the issue of a Private Pilot Licence by Canada or other contracting state, have completed 65 hours of Commercial Pilot training in aeroplanes consisting of no less than:

AEROPLANE CATEGORY:

- 35 hours dual flight time, including;

(a) 5 hours night flying, including a minimum of 2 hours cross-country flight time

(b) 5 hours cross-country, which may include experience from (a) above
(c) 20 hours of instrument flight time in addition to the experience from a & b above. A maximum of 10 hours of the 20 hours may be conducted on an approved aeroplane simulator or training device

- 30 hours solo flight time, including;

(a) 25 hours of solo flight time emphasizing the improvement of general flying skills of the applicant and shall include a cross-country flight to a point of no less than 300 nautical mile radius from the point of departure and shall include at least 3 landings at points other than that of departure

(b) 5 hours solo flight time by night during which 10 take-offs, circuits and landings were completed.

KNOWLEDGE: The applicant shall further demonstrate their knowledge by:

1. Completing a course of no less than 80 hours Commercial Pilot Aeroplane ground school instruction on the following subjects: Canadian Aviation Regulations, Aerodynamics and Theory of Flight, Meteorology, Airframes, Engines & Systems, Flight Instruments, Radio & Electronic Theory, Navigation, Flight Operations and Licensing Requirements.

2. Obtaining no less than 60% in each of the 4 mandatory subject areas as well as in the overall written examination (CPAER)

  1. Air Law Regulations, Air Traffic Services, practices and procedures, and licensing requirements relevant to the licence

  2. Navigation-navigation radio aids and electronic theory

  3. Meteorology

  4. Aeronautics, general knowledge, airframes, engines and systems, theory of flight, flight instruments and flight operations.

Night Rating

EXPERIENCE: The Night Rating is for those who hold a Private Pilot Licence and wish to fly at night, however, for those who wish to get a Commercial Pilot Licence these training hours are included in that course. An applicant for a night rating shall acquire dual night and dual instrument flight time from the holder of a Flight Instructor Rating and, except as provided below, they shall have acquired no less than 20 hours of pilot flight time in the same category of aircraft and no less than;
AEROPLANE CATEGORY:
(i)
10 hours of night flight time including a minimum of:

    (a) 5 hours dual flight time, including 2 hours of cross-country flight time,

    (b) 5 hours solo flight time, including 10 takeoffs, circuits and landings, and

(ii) 10 hours dual instrument time.

(iii) Credit for a maximum of five hours of the 10 hours of dual instrument time may be given for instrument ground time, provided that the total instrument time shall be in addition to the 10 hours night flight time in subparagraph (i) above.

Multi-Engine Rating

There is no specific time requirement for the multi-engine rating; we have found that 5 to 10 hours is adequate to meet Transport Canada flight test requirements. Rental for Multi PIC time available after completion of training the Welland Aero Center.

Instrument Rating

WE OFFER A FAST TRACK PROGRAM UPON REQUEST
EXPERIENCE:
An applicant must have acquired no less than:
- 50 hours of pilot-in-command cross-country flight time in aeroplanes, including no less than 100 hours in aeroplanes where the applicant is applying for a Group 1, 2 or 3 instrument rating
- 40 hours of instrument time of which no more than 20 hours may be instrument ground time. The 40 hours instrument time shall include no less than
(a) 5 hours dual instrument flight time acquired from the holder of a Flight Instructor Rating
(b) 5 hours in aeroplanes where the applicant is applying for Group 1, 2 o r 3 Instrument rating.
(c) 15 hours of dual instrument flight time acquired from an approved person and/or Flight Instructor.
(d) One cross-country flight under simulated or actual IFR conditions of no less than 100 nautical miles under the direction and supervision of an approved person and/or Flight Instructor. The flight is to include at two different locations an instrument approach to minima.
KNOWLEDGE: The applicant shall have obtained no less than 70% on the Instrument Rating written examination (INRAT) which shall include the following subjects: Air Regulations, Instrument Flight Rules and Procedures, Meteorology, Instruments, Radio and Radar Systems and Navigation.
